GiveWell awards Dimagi funding to scale child health delivery in Nigeria

GiveWell has awarded Dimagi a grant of more than $1 million to scale service delivery through Connect and cost-effectively improve essential child health coverage in Nigeria.
Connect builds on Dimagi’s flagship CommCare platform to let Frontline Workers opt into additional paid, purposeful work through scalable learn, deliver, verify, and pay cycles. It strengthens the frontline workforces that already exist, rather than standing up new ones, to improve health outcomes.
The funding enables Dimagi to engage several locally led organizations to deliver the Connect Child Health Campaign in targeted, underserved regions of northern Nigeria. The model scales through high-fidelity replication across partners rather than centralized expansion. Together, Dimagi and its partners will provide more than 300,000 child health visits over 18 months.
300,000+ verified child health visits over 18 months, across underserved regions of northern Nigeria.
Every visit delivers Vitamin A supplementation, oral rehydration solution and zinc, malnutrition screening, and vaccination promotion for children under five. Each one is verified before payment, so funders can see exactly what their money delivered.
The award follows a successful initial planning grant, underscoring GiveWell’s view that Connect has potential as a cost-effective way to increase coverage. The partnership aims to improve the effectiveness of Frontline Workers through digital technology and verified, results-based delivery.
Inside the Child Health Campaign
The Child Health Campaign targets high under-five mortality driven by preventable disease. Frontline Workers conduct door-to-door visits to register every child under five and deliver a package of health services:
- Vitamin A supplementation, essential for reducing child mortality.
- Vaccine promotion, encouraging complete immunization schedules.
- Oral rehydration solution and zinc, to treat diarrhea.
- Malnutrition screening and referral, to identify and address cases early.
Dimagi has seen early success with locally led partners running the campaign in five countries, reaching more than 100,000 children. This grant lets the model reach further, one verified visit at a time.
